Biografie
Carll Cneut (1969, Roeselare) studeerde Grafische Vormgeving aan Sint-Lucas in Gent. Hij schildert ambachtelijk met acryl en brengt vele lagen verf over elkaar aan. Al schilderend vervolmaakt hij techniek en compositie.
Carll is toevallig bij het illustreren terechtgekomen. Zijn eerste professionele stappen zette hij in de reclamewereld. Door een opdracht voor een tijdschrift rolde bij per toeval de wereld van illustratie in. In 1996 debuteerde hij met Varkentjes van marsepein waar zijn herkenbare stijl al zichtbaar is. Hij is een van Vlaanderens invloedrijkste illustratoren en zijn werk is bekroond in binnen- en buitenland.
Carll werkt graag met acrylverf, maar probeert er bij ieder boek ook een nieuw element aan toe te voegen (pastel, wasco of inkt). Hij hecht veel belang aan de voorbereiding, experimenteert met ruwe schetsen en verschillende materialen.

Wat mag je verwachten?
“Hoe vind je jouw unieke stijl? Hoe vertaal je je persoonlijkheid naar papier? Wat vertel je met beelden en wat met woorden? Hoe creëer je een personage op basis van een tekst? Wat kan je als illustrator toevoegen aan het verhaal? Welke impact hebben de personages en de verhaallijn op het kleurenpalet? En hoe vind je jouw stem in je illustraties? Persoonlijkheid leggen in je werk is de rode draad doorheen deze Summer School.
Met je personages maak je een storyboard en verhaallijn die je samenvloeien in enkele illustraties. De nadruk ligt hier op je persoonlijke stijl en authenticiteit die je onderscheiden van andere illustratoren.
Ik toon je technieken die ik gebruik in mijn eigen werk, waaronder de klassieke technieken. Maar door de jaren heen heb ik meer experimentele technieken ontwikkeld die een onverwachte draai geven aan je werk. We starten met kleine oefeningen. Ik motiveer de deelnemers om hun eigen materialen te gebruiken en begeleid iedere student persoonlijk om zijn techniek te verfijnen. Tijdens de lessen praat ik over mijn carrière, ervaringen, do’s en don'ts. Studenten moeten hun nieuwsgierigheid niet onder stoelen of banken steken: vragen staat vrij.” – Carll Cneut

Bio
Carll Cneut (°1969, Roeselare) studied Graphic Design at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. He took his first professional steps in the advertising business. He paints with acrylic and applies many layers of paint on top of each other. While painting he refines technique and composition.
An assignment for a magazine opened up the world of illustration for Carll. His debut ‘Varkentjes van marsepein’ (1996) followed soon. From the very beginning of his career Carll’s style is very recognizable. He is one of Flanders’ most influential illustrators and his work has been awarded (inter)nationally.
Carll prefers to work with acrylic paint, but also tries other materials like pastels, crayola or ink. He values preparation and likes to experiment with rough sketches and different materials.

What to expect?
"How to find your own unique illustration style? How do you put your personality in your images? How do you tell a story? What to use from the written word and how to use what is not written.
How do you create a character starting from a written text? What can an illustrator add to the text? And very important: what to do with what's not written? What is the impact of creating a main character for your storytelling or the color palette? How do you find your own voice in illustration and storytelling? Uniqueness and personality are a central theme that runs through my summer course.
Working with these characters, you make a storyboard and storyline, which you will turn into several illustrations. Everything you do should be very personal. That is the only way to survive as an illustrator.
I will show some of the techniques I use in my own work. Some based on classic techniques of layering and dead color underpainting, inspired by old masters. But also some rather unconventional techniques that are the result of years of experimenting, sometimes adding unexpected elements to your paint. Techniques which can be easily put into practice with other materials and which you can apply in your own work.
We will experiment through small exercises, trying to liberate ourselves from expectations and standards. I will urge students to experiment with their own materials. I will speak with them about their techniques and what I think they can add. We will talk about authenticity. Mentoring is on a personal basis. I will guide each student personally.
Throughout the summer course I will talk about my own career, experiences, do's and don'ts and students are free to ask me anything they (really) want to know. Students should bring their own portfolio and their favorite materials to work with. Also some sketching paper and sketching materials. Students can also bring a list of questions if they want to.
