Biografie

Het werk van Fatinha Ramos (°1977, Aveiro) neemt je me naar een fantasierijke wereld waar unieke texturen, een rijk kleurenpallet en surrealistische composities de plak zwaaien.

Na haar studie Grafische Vormgeving in Porto, verhuisde ze naar Antwerpen. Na 12 jaar in de design- en kunstwereld, waagde ze de sprong om fulltime illustrator te worden.

Haar illustraties belichten vaak maatschappelijke thema’s zoals het klimaat, seksisme en racisme. Fatinha hecht veel belang aan het geven van een stem aan hen die niet gehoord worden. Ze illustreert niet enkel prentenboeken, maar maakt ook illustraties voor kranten en tijdschriften, advertenties, muurschilderingen, …

Je kan haar werk zien in The New York Times, TIME, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Google, MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art New York), Amnesty International, … Vorig jaar was ze de Pro Category Winner en Pro Overall Winner van de World Illustration Awards.

Wat mag je verwachten?

"Word een visuele verteller. Leer illustraties maken voor editorials en voor woordeloze prentenboeken.

Hoe illustreer je een verhaal dat geworteld is in echte gebeurtenissen en een breed publiek aanspreekt? Hoe visualiseer je emoties en drama?

We zijn allemaal verhalenvertellers, we hebben verhalen nodig om te geloven, begrijpen, kalmeren, inspireren én geïnspireerd te worden... Verhalen roepen emoties bij ons op. Ik zal leren hoe je ze kunt visualiseren, als een dichter met een penseel.

We maken een woordeloos prentenboek. Ik leer je hoe je metaforen en symbolische verwijzingen kunt gebruiken om emoties uit te drukken. We werken met analoge technieken.

Tijdens een vierdaagse reis ontwikkel je storytelling in één enkele tekening (redactionele illustratie) en creëer je drie spreads en een cover van een woordeloos prentenboek.

Je onderzoekt je eigen capaciteiten en experimenteert door middel van verschillende oefeningen, niet alleen met materialen maar ook met emoties en conceptueel denken. Er is geen eerdere ervaring nodig om deze cursus te volgen." - Fatinha Ramos

Benodigheden

• Schetsboek
• A3-papier, overtrekpapier, acetaatvellen
• Stiften op alcohol- of waterbasis
• Potlood, acryl, katoen, kleurpotloden
• Twee persoonlijke voorwerpen (of foto's)
• Portfolio (als je er eentje hebt)

Bio

Fatinha Ramos (°1977, Aveiro) is an Antwerp-based illustrator originally from Portugal. Her work takes us on a journey through her imaginary world of singular textures and rich color pallet, with surreal compositions that create an emotive and fascinating universe.

After studying graphic design in Porto, she moved to Antwerp where she worked for 12 years in design and art direction before taking the leap to follow the old dream of becoming a full-time illustrator. 

Her illustrations often raise important social issues such as global warming, sexism, racism and giving a voice to those who need to be heard. In addition to editorial illustration, children’s books, cultural and governmental illustration, advertisement, murals, animations, fashion, and ceramics, she also works on personal artistic projects.

Fatinha’s work can be seen in The New York Times, TIME, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Google, MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art New York), Amnesty International, … Last year she was the Pro Category Winner and Pro Overall Winner of the World Illustration Awards.

What to expect?

"Become a visual storyteller for editorial illustration and craft a silent non-fiction children’s story.

How to illustrate a story rooted in real events that appeals to a broad audience? How to visualise emotions and drama?

We are all storytellers, we need stories to believe, to understand, to sooth, to inspire and be inspired… Stories stir up emotions in us. I will teach you how to visualise them, like a poet with brushes.

We will be making a “ silent" children’s story, and  learn to create visual narratives from scratch, without the use of words. I will show you how to use metaphors and symbolic references, express emotions in images by using analogue techniques.

During a four day journey you will develop storytelling in one single image (editorial illustration), and create three spreads and a cover of a captivating children’s silent story.

You will be exploring your own capacities and experiment through different exercises, not only with materials but also with emotions, and conceptual thinking. No previous experience is needed to take this course." - Fatinha Ramos

What to bring?

• Sketchbook
• A3 paper, tracing paper, acetate sheets
• Alcohol or water-based markers
• Pencils, acrylics, cotton, color pencils
• Two personal objects (or photos)
• Portfolio (in case you have one)
