Biografie
Manuel Marsol (1984, Madrid - ES) werkte eerst in de reclamewereld vooraleer hij koos voor zijn echte passie: tekenen. Nu maakt hij prentenboeken samen met schrijver Carmen Chica. Voor het boek De berg ontving hij een award op de Kinderboekenbeurs van Bologna.
Zijn boeken worden wereldwijd gelezen en uitgegeven: van Frankrijk, Portugal en Italië tot China, Japan en Zuid-Korea.
In 2025 gaf Marsol al een workshop en lezing op het illustratiefestival De Verbeelders.

Wat mag je verwachten?
Relikwieën uit de kindertijd
Prentenboeken, herinneringen en de poëzie van de ruimte
“Deze workshop is gebaseerd op een van de grootste inspiratiebronnen voor het maken van prentenboeken: onze jeugdherinneringen. De titel is ontleend aan Jan Švankmajer, de Tsjechische filmanimator, en zijn Decaloog voor kunstenaars: "Geef je over aan je obsessies. Er is niets beters. Obsessies zijn de relikwieën van de kindertijd. En de kostbaarste schatten komen uit de diepten van de kindertijd."
"De workshop vindt ook zijn oorsprong in het belang van ruimtes en plaatsen in onze herinneringen. Zoals Gaston Bachelard in zijn boek Poëzie van de ruimte zei, is het huis van onze kindertijd onze hoek van de wereld, ons eerste universum. De ruimte die we als kinderen bewonen als een plek van dromen, en dus als een bron van poëzie voor ons volwassen leven."
"Dus gaan we tekenen (en soms schrijven), met kortere of langere oefeningen, waarbij we reeksen, kleine verhaaltjes of gewoon inspirerende beelden opbouwen, waarbij we vooral onze herinneringen als brandstof gebruiken (foto's, speelgoed, plaatsen, ...) Dit wordt gecombineerd met het plezier van het lezen van prentenboeken die leuk zijn voor alle leeftijden. We bespreken en analyseren deze boeken, met speciale aandacht voor hun poëzie, sfeer, ruimtes en verbanden met onze eigen kindertijd."

Heb je voorkennis nodig?
Interesse in illustratie en prentenboeken. Je houdt van tekenen, maar je moet geen professional zijn.
Benodigdheden
- A3 papier (stevig papier om op te schilderen)
- Enkele basiskleuren acrylverf
- Penselen
- Potloden
- Viltstiften
- Verschillende soorten penselen`
- Karton (vb. gebruikte dozen)
- Andere materialen waar je graag mee werkt
- Eén of twee prentenboeken die je leuk vindt
- Eén of enkele foto's uit je kindertijd. Je kan een foto meenemen waar je zelf op staat (alleen of met anderen), een foto waar je niet op staat, een foto die een mysterie is. Foto's die gemaakt zijn op een plek die je leuk vond: een bepaalde kamer in huis, de tuin, op straat, in een winkel, op het strand, ...
- Als je dit nog hebt: een stuk speelgoed uit je kindertijd

Bio
Manuel Marsol (1984, Madrid - ES) first worked in advertising before deciding to pursue his true passion: drawing. he now creates picture books together with writer Carmen Chica. He received an award for his book 'De berg' at the Bologna Children's Book Fair.
His books are read and published worldwide: from France, Portugal, and Italy to China, Japan and South Korea.
In 2025, Marsol gave a workshop and lecture at the illustration festival De Verbeelders.
What to expect?
Relics of childhood
Picture books, memories and the poetics of space
"This workshop is based on one of the biggest inspirations to create picture books: our childhood memories. The title is taken from Jan Švankmajer, the Czech film animator, and his Decalogue for artists: “Surrender to your obsessions. There is nothing better. Obsessions are the relics of childhood. And the most precious treasures come from the depths of childhood.”
"It also has its origin in the importance of spaces and places in our memories. As Gaston Bachelard said in his book Poetics of Space, the house of childhood is our corner of the world, our first universe. The space we inhabit as children as a place of dreams, and therefore as a source of poetry for our adulthood."
"So we will draw (and sometimes write), with shorter or longer exercises, building sequences, little stories or just inspiring images, using mainly our memories as fuel (photos, toys, places….). This will be combined with the pleasure of reading picture books enjoyable for all ages that will be discussed and analyzed all together, paying special attention to their poetics, atmosphere, spaces and connections to our own childhood."

Do you need prior knowledge?
Interest in illustration and picture books. You like drawing, but you don't need to be a professional.
What should you bring yourself?
- A3 paper (sturdy paper for painting)
- Some basic colours of acrylic paint
- Paintbrushes
- Pencils
- Felts
- Different sizes of brushes
- Cardboard (e.g. used boxes)
- Other materials you like to work with
- One or two pictures books you love
- One ar a few photos from your childhood. You can bring a photo where you appear yourself (alone or with others, a photo where you're not on, a photo that is a mystery. Photos that are made at a place you love: a specific room at home, a garden, street, shop, beach, ...
- A toy from you childhood (if you still have it)
